How we compare
Car charging costs, independently ranked. Every rate dated and sourced.
How we work out your cost
Your miles become kWh
8,000 miles at 3.5 miles per kWh is about 2,286 kWh of charging a year.
We split it by window
90% at the off-peak rate, the rest at the day rate. Tell us if you charge more in the day.
Car charging only
The figure covers charging your car. The rest of your home's use is not included.
annual cost = (miles ÷ miles per kWh) × (off-peak % × off-peak rate + rest × peak rate), compared with the same kWh at the price capOur full comparison method
A worked example
8,000 miles ÷ 3.5 miles per kWh = 2,286 kWh per year.
At EDF GoElectric's 6.66p off-peak and 27.10p peak rates, with 90% charged off-peak: £199 a year.
The same charging at 26.32p costs £602 - a saving of £403. We round the annual total to whole pounds before subtracting it from the rounded cap total.
Our data sources
Tariff rates, windows and eligibility come from supplier pages. The electricity price cap comes from Ofgem. Regional lookup uses Octopus grid supply points, with independently validated postcode and outward-code fallbacks.
Freshness and regional rates
Prices are indicative and vary by region and supplier. Always confirm with the provider. Rates checked 20-22 Oct 2026 (OVO from 1 Oct).
Each tariff links to its supplier source and checked date. If a region cannot be confirmed, we label national averages. A checked date is not a guarantee of today's price: always confirm with the supplier. Concept listings are clearly labelled and must not be treated as live quotes.
What we exclude
Standing charges and the rest of your home's electricity use are not part of the charging headline. Any-time tariffs use their single charging rate for all car kWh. Affiliate information is kept outside the ranking engine. Best match is the lowest annual cost at your usage, not the highest commission.
